About Burger's Market
The Burger family has been in the grocery business since John Burger, grandfather of the current owners, came to the United States in 1888.
John Burger became a U.S. citizen in 1896. In 1904 he opened his first store, the Louisville Meat Market, at 222 South Second Street. His children John Jr., Herbert and Marguarite worked alongside him in his store until it closed in 1924.
From 1925-1945 John Jr. worked as a clerk and then as a manager at the Piggly-Wiggly at 110 Garland Avenue, and then at the Steiden Store, which was located at Highland and Baxter Avenue.

By 1946, John Jr. owned his own grocery store at Fifth and Breckenridge Street, JAB Market. He also co-owned Dolt's Market on Poplar Level Road with Scott Detrick (future owner of Scott's Markets). John Jr. and Scott opened B & D Market at Fifth and Hill Street in 1949. From 1951-1958, John Jr. was the sole owner of B & D Market.
In 1958, John Jr. bought the current market in the Cherokee Triangle from Ivy's Grocery. Ivy's closed on Saturday and Burger's Superette opened on Monday. We've been here ever since!
John Jr.'s children, Jacque, John III (Tony), Jeff, Julie, and Jolene all grew up helping out at "the store. Tony and Jeff took over the store in 1978 when their father, John Jr. retired. Many children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and great friends have worked at Burgers over the years to help make it the "Family Owned Store" that it is today.
